Is going gluten free going to get rid of my knee pain?

Will Going Gluten Free Help My Pain?

My friend told me to go gluten free to get rid of my knee pain. Does that really work?

When someone mentions they have joint pain this is one of the recommendations: stop eating X, Y, Z

I get this question a lot.

Does eating gluten free help with pain?

Not everyone needs to stop eating gluten: if you have a gluten sensitivity, allergy or have Celiac Disease you *need* to give up gluten.

For someone who has a reaction to gluten is going to have chronic inflammation. If you have chronic inflammation you likely have pain. Getting rid of the chronic inflammation will reduce or eliminate your pain.

How do I know if I need to go gluten free?

You will find out if you need to go gluten free by seeing your doctor and getting tested for diagnoses like Celiac Disease, an allergy to gluten or a sensitivity to gluten.

How do I go gluten free?

  1. Go through your pantry and fridge

    1. Throw away or donate any food that lists an ingredient that contains gluten

      1. Wheat

      2. Barley

      3. Rye

      4. And any of their derivatives

  2. Find cookbooks or recipes online for gluten free or grain free cooking

  3. Eat lots of whole foods including fresh fruits and vegetables, fresh meats or seafood

Will going gluten free get rid of my pain?

Going gluten free may help with your knee pain by decreasing inflammation. But, your knee pain also likely needs an exercise program to build up strength, flexibility and balance.

To recap not everyone needs to go gluten free. Someone who has Celiac disease, a gluten allergy or gluten sensitivity should go gluten free. Going gluten free for someone with these diagnoses can help reduce inflammation which can help reduce pain. You likely also need an exercise routine for strength, flexibility and balance.
